The Ninja SLUSHi looks like exactly the kind of appliance a family could love all summer — frozen lemonade, pop slushies, movie-night drinks and something fun for birthdays or barbecues.

It also looks like exactly the kind of appliance that could be exciting for two weeks and then end up taking up cupboard space.

So the real question is not whether it is fun.

Will your family use it enough to justify the price?

At its current sale price of $299.99, the Ninja SLUSHi is much easier to justify than it was at its regular $449.99 price.

It makes the most sense for families who expect to use it regularly for summer drinks, parties and entertaining.

If your goal is simply to replace the occasional 7-Eleven Slurpee, buying the Slurpee is still cheaper and easier.

What Does the Ninja SLUSHi Do?

Unlike a blender, the Ninja SLUSHi does not require ice. Its RapidChill system freezes the liquid inside the machine while keeping it moving to create a smooth frozen-drink texture.

The Canadian FS301C has an 88 oz. vessel, but the maximum liquid fill is 64 oz. or about 1.9 L.

That means a full 2 L bottle of pop will not quite fit in one batch.

It can make drinks such as slushies, frozen juice, frappés, milkshakes and spiked slushies. Ninja also says drinks can stay frozen in the machine for up to 12 hours.

That sale price changes our opinion quite a bit. At $450, this is clearly a luxury purchase. At around $300, it becomes more realistic for a family that knows it will get regular use.

How Many Slurpees Would It Take to Pay for It?

This was the comparison we found most interesting.

7-Eleven Canada currently advertises any-size Slurpees for $2.50.

Using current pop prices and comparing similar drink volumes, we estimate that at the Ninja’s $299.99 sale price, a family would need to replace roughly:

134 to 174 Slurpee-sized drinks

before ingredient savings alone recovered the cost of the machine.

That is still a lot of frozen drinks.

For example, if a family of four each had one homemade frozen drink every week during a 12-week summer, that would be 48 drinks per summer.

At that pace, reaching about 150 drinks would take a little over three summers.

So we would not buy the Ninja SLUSHi purely as a money-saving appliance.

The financial case works much better when you also value the convenience, entertaining and fun.

Ninja SLUSHi vs. a Blender

A blender is still the practical choice if you only want an occasional frozen drink.

• Useful for many other kitchen jobs
• Usually requires ice
• Ice can dilute the drink

For occasional use, stick with the blender.

For a family that specifically wants the frozen-drink-machine experience and will use it often, the Ninja is much more appealing.

One Important Catch

Not every drink will automatically work in the SLUSHi.

Frozen-drink machines depend on the sugar and ingredient composition of the liquid, so very low-sugar or zero-sugar drinks may require an appropriate recipe.

If your household mainly drinks diet or zero-sugar beverages, check Ninja’s recipe guidance before buying.

Who Should Buy It?

Consider it if:

• Your family loves frozen drinks
• You will use it several times a month
• You entertain regularly
• You have kids or teenagers who would enjoy it
• You have convenient counter or storage space
• You want more than just cola slushies

Skip it if:

At $449.99, the Ninja SLUSHi is a fairly expensive splurge.

At the current $299.99 sale price, we like it much more.

You probably will not justify it by replacing a few Slurpees each summer. But for a family that will use it regularly for frozen drinks, parties and entertaining, the combination of fun, convenience and eventual savings can make the purchase worthwhile.

Our advice: don’t buy it because you think it will magically save money. Buy it because your family will genuinely use it.
